This helpful guide to orchestral instruments, composed in 1946, is subtitled “Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Purcell” and is based on a dance tune by the English baroque composer Henry Purcell. The greatest period of organ music and organ building was from 1600 to 1750, when the organ became known as the "king of instruments."
